Something a little dark and different. Myronik - You Me You

This track is one of those that is extremely difficult to classify, in a really good way.  It takes you on a journey through your mind, lulling you into a trance and then snapping you out of it multiple times in just 5 and a half minutes.  Take some time today to put on your headphones, close your eyes, and get lost in this song.  You won't regret it.

Myronik is a producer from Dublin, Ireland.  He only has 4 tracks on his Soundcloud page, and I recommend giving each of them a listen.  It was hard to pick just one to spotlight.

Climbers - 2 Come Back EP [Culprit]

It's finally here! I've been patiently waiting for this release since I first heard Droog drop the original mix at Coachella in April.  I happily give you "2 Come Back" by Climbers, released July 30th on Culprit, Droog's LA-based (absolutely stellar) label.

Climbers outdid themselves with this one.  Literally every element of this track is too catchy.  The Mexican duo of Jay Blakk and Kiko Dea do everything in their power to rope you in: from the bassline hook, to the atmospheric accents, to the infectious vocals, I'm pretty sure its impossible to stand still when this track is played.  Add in remixes from Venezuelan tech house gurus Fur Coat (Crosstown Rebels) and indie dance / disco legend Miguel Campbell (Hot Creations) and you have yourself a sterling EP.  Grab the EP here!

Guy J, Justin Martin @ Sullivan Room: Review

A couple of us ended up at the Sullivan Room both nights this weekend after Pacha royally fucked up the Prydz show on Saturday night.  Criminal Sound brought in Guy J (Bedrock Records) on Friday, and Zombie Disco Squad and Justin Martin (Dirtybird) were recruited by Verboten for the party Saturday.

Guy J

I've never seen Guy J before and was not sure what to expect.  The Israeli producer and DJ has been on the scene for quite a while now and has no shortage of amazing singles and full-lengths released on John Digweed's Bedrock Records.  His tracks can be quite ambient at points, drawing influences of techno and electronica.  Definitely a deeper, darker sound, but always melodic and soulful at the same time.  The Sullivan Room's Core Audio sound system brought out the best in these tracks too.  Sidenote: he uses Ableton to mix!  So do I!  Maybe we can be best friends?

One of my favorites:

New Deadmau5

Joel Zimmerman aka Deadmau5 is never afraid to shed a little controversy.  Sadly, I feel I've lost some of the magic with his music because of his recent public statements.  But with these last couple releases, the man is showing me signs that he is re-discovery the sounds that launched him into the global sensation he has become.  His new song "there might be coffee" sounds just like the Deadmau5 of Random Album Title.  It is beautiful, harmonic and peaceful but sure enough to set a dance floor on fire.  Take a listen below and hope that the old mau5 has returned for good. P.S. get the free download while it lasts!!!!!

The XX's 'Angels' gets an upbeat makeover from Theatre of Delays

German producer Theatre of Delays has taken The XX's 'Angels' and given it a fun disco feel:

Check out The XX's original version here:

Theatre of Delays has a ton of great songs (and free downloads) on his Soundcloud page, here are a few of my favorites:

Prince - When Doves Cry (Theatre of Delays Remix)

The Rapture - In the Grace of Your Love (Theatre of Delays Remix)

Theatre of Delays - Journey to the Sun

This guy is super talented, and I hope we see a lot more from him in the future. Let us know what you guys think!

New Crystal Castles

Crystal Castles released a new song via their Soundcloud page called 'Plague' earlier this morning.  The duo have been spending time in Warsaw working on their third album, to be released sometime this summer.  However, there is no official word if this song is going to be on that album.  The song jumps back and forth between an ethereal feel with Alice's haunting vocals we know from songs like 'Celestica' and a much more aggressive section somewhat more in line with a song like 'Alice Practice.'

Give it a listen:

Crystal Castles don't have any upcoming dates in NY, but if you want to make the trek down to Philly, they will be playing at The Electric Factory on October 2nd.  You can find tickets here.

New Boys Noize!

Alex Ridha, AKA Boys Noize has released the first track from his new album via Rolling Stone's website.  Ridha says that this track has combined the "raw and rough" sounds of his earliest music with the beats and styles of 80's hip hop, particularly The Beastie Boys.

Listen to the song on Rolling Stone's website.

His third album, Out of the Dark, will be released on October 22nd.  Ridha says the name of the album is taken from the fact that he usually produces music at night.  Boys Noize has been a favorite of mine since the release of Oi Oi Oi and judging by this most recent release, I don't think this album will disappoint.

The Presets have pushed up the release of their new album, 'Pacifica' to September 7th.  If that news isn't exciting enough, they have decided to celebrate the good news by giving us a free download!  The free download is the legendary Green Velvet's killer remix of 'Pacifica's' first single, Youth in Trouble.  It's a great remix, grab it here!

Stream the track:

And in case you haven't heard the original or see the video, here it is:

Flosstradamus + Trap

Over the past couple weeks or so I have been seeing more and more trap music popping up out of the blue. And no, I do not mean Southern Rap trap music, I mean electronic trap music.  Extract the quick high hats and heavy hip hop bass, throw it in with an electronic song, and cut it into half time.  Obviously, there is more to it than this but these are the basics of it.  For me, the electronic trap movement is largely due to the gentlemen on the forefront of this, known as Flosstradamus. In my humble opinion, they are becoming the most well known in the "genre" (has it gotten that big to be a whole genre?) but for good reason, these guys have talent.

I initially caught them at Lollapalooza in 2010 and thoroughly enjoyed their set at Perry's stage. One thing that really caught my attention was the way that hip hop seemed to really influence them with samples and vocal edits throughout their songs. My personal favorite was of such popular songs at the time as One by Swedish House Mafia with Act a Fool (one of my favorite edits that I still have been unable to find). This hip hop influence has stuck with them and it shows in all of their trap songs, which is largely all that they produce now.

Below, is a small sampling of some Flosstradamus with a mix and one of my favorites of theirs from the trap "genre". Prepare to be addicted to the heavy hip hop bass and the insanely quick high hat riffs. In addition, I have posted my newest favorite trap song that I just discovered today via the Flosstradamus mix below. Definitely be on the lookout for trap as this is all blowing up real fast and is perfect for any bar or house party.

Brand New Chemical Brothers and Relatively New Soulwax!

The new Chemical Brothers track produced for the 2012 Olympics was previewed on Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show Monday evening and the radio rip has been making it's way around the internet.  The song was produced for the Velodrome, where the cycling events will occur.  I really enjoy the song and you can definitely hear some Kraftwerk influences, check it out below-

VEL.  O.  DROME.

To add to that, a new remix by Soulwax was released about a month ago and I didn't catch it until tonight!  In case anyone else was living under the same rock that I must have been, I decided to add it to this post.  It is a remix of Synrise by Goose.  The song starts off with a very slow powerful build until exploding with the Soulwax sound we know and love around 1:55.  Unfortunately the song has not been officially released digitally, but if you are interested in picking up the vinyl you can find it here.

And finally, because writing this post has put me in a Chems/Soulwax mood, here are a few more tracks

Cruisechella?

Rumors have been flying about what the unexpected Coachella announcement is going to be today at 6 PST (9 EST). The L.A. Times has just reported that unnamed sources have told them that Goldenvoice is organizing a music festival on a cruise ship, similar to Hard's Holy Ship!! or Cloud 9's Jam Cruise.  Very few details have been reported, but apparently the ship could set sail as early as December.  Of course, if the cruise rumors are true, there is still no guarantee it is going to be today's announcement.  We should also keep in mind the rumors of the possible Goldenvoice festival in Orange County's Great Park.

If the news is true, what do you guys think of Goldenvoice diving into the nautical music festival scene?

Edit:  Yes, the rumors are true, and we already have a lineup!  Just like Land-Coachella, S.S. Coachella will be held over two consecutive weekends.  The first weekend will take the passengers down to the Bahamas, and the second weekend will be journeying to Jamaica.

This New York Times article has some further information about the festival.  Apparently there will be a half acre of grass because it "wouldn't be Coachella without grass" and due to the lack of curfew, passengers might just see some extra long sets from artists.   You can get further information, including pricing, at the official website.

Just some Quality Tewns

Don't really have anything specific to write about today, but I figured I'd throw some jams up that I've been loving recently.

Quality Jam here from Dawson / Catz and Dogz.  I love that driving bassline.

Jack Beats New Album

Finally! Some news about Jack Beats' new album. Anyone who follows them knows how much they have been in the studio as of late. Today they released a 30 minute mixtape of some of their new material and let me just say it's magnificent. They have said they are going to release two mini albums rather than one big one as it "works better with their style of music". The first album, Careless, will be released via OWSLA on Beatport August 7th. From what this mixtape has to offer, I do not think anyone will be disappointed with what they have come up with (can you really go wrong with that signature wobbly Jack Beats sound?). In addition, if Niall & Beni are ever around your area (they'll be at EZoo) then I strongly recommend you check them out. Seen them three times now and they always throw a hell of a show.

Tracklist:
1. Jack Beats: Intro
2. Jack Beats: Careless ft. Takura
3. Beyonce: Countdown (Jack Beats Rework)
4. Duke Dumont: Street Walker
5. Jack Beats: War ft. Example & Diplo
6. Jack Beats: End Of Love (Re-edit)
7. Jack Beats: Fast Girls ft. MNEK (Instrumental)
8. Flux Pavillion: Daydreamer (Jack Beats Remix)
9. Jack Beats: Just a beat (Demo mix)
10. Justin Martin: Ruff Stuff

Nero + Andy C Live

Our fellow writer, Deegleberry, mentioned to me last night that there may be a new Nero Essential Mix out there. Being that their old Essential Mix is one of the best mixes I've ever heard to this day and probably the best dubstep mix ever conceived, I had to check this out. What I came across was a live recording from BBC Radio 1 of Nero and Andy C Live at Hackney Weekend. Granted, I have seen Nero live before so this isn't as exciting as an all new Essential Mix but it still is getting me through the morning.

Also, I've never had the privilege to catch Andy C Live (I will at EZoo in a couple months) and he definitely lives up to the hype with this hour long set. I still have no idea why DnB producers/DJ's feel the need to have hype men that just yap constantly over the mix but I guess it's something we have to live with for now (minor rant/plea for no hype men at EZoo).  Definitely a good way to get you through the first couple hours of work today regardless. Soundcloud recording courtesy of EDMTunes.com and tracklist below after the jump as well.

New Bloc Party Single and Mixtape!

Bloc party has released their first new song in three years! The song is called ‘Octopus’ and it seems the boys still know how to write a great song. The song has Bloc Party’s signature driving guitar with the electronic influences that we saw on ‘Intimacy’ and ‘A Weekend in the City. A very solid tune that will get you dancing. The song is the first single off of their new album, ‘Four,‘ which will be released on August 20th and will be their first full album in four years. Check out the song in the video below.

Bloc party is playing a series of festivals and stand alone shows in the U.S. over the next few months, starting with Hard Summer Music Festival in Los Angeles.  Bloc Party has released a promotional mixtape for the festival.  As usual, they touch on quite a few different styles and genres, but definitely keep you dancing the whole time.  Give it a listen.

Bloc Party has three shows scheduled at Terminal 5 on August 7th, 8th, and 9th.  The 8th and 9th are sold out, but you can still grab tickets for the 7th!  Get on it!

Van She's 'Idea of Happiness' Released in U.S.

Sydney-based Van She just released  their second full-length, ‘Idea of Happiness’  (well, just released in the United States, Australia got it last week).  This is a perfect album for relaxing through the second half of summer.   I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys Cut Copy, Hot Chip or Holy Ghost!.  You can stream it through RDIO here.

Highlight tracks include- Idea of Happiness, Jamaica, Radio Waves I, and Tears.

You can also watch the video for the title track ‘Idea of Happiness’ below.  This song is so catchy that I could definitely see it taking the same path of Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know,’ by gaining massive amounts of popularity until it finally gets picked up by mainstream radio stations several months after it’s release, and then getting overplayed so often that I won't want to hear it again for years (but let's hope that doesn't happen).  I recommend the video to anyone who can find humor in mild male nudity.

Van She is currently touring Australia in support of the new album, but hopefully will see some U.S. dates announced for the Fall or Winter.

Tuesday Afternoon Grooves

Writing about the Sasha Sunset Cruise got me stoked on all the new music I've been getting lately, so I decided to lay down a little set last night.  Slower, smooth deep house tunes.  Hope you enjoy.

Sasha Sunset Cruise 2012: Review / Track IDs

I'm REALLY excited to write this one!

James Teej, Sasha, and Thugfucker respectivelyPhoto: Dan Frey
I was fortunate enough to be on the Sasha's Never Say Never 4th of July Sunset Cruise this year, and I'm quite confident it was probably best party I've ever been to.  For those of you new to this scene, this was the 2nd annual (I think?) Sasha Sunset Cruise on the 4th of July in NYC.  Picture a night partying with 200 of your closest friends with some of the best DJs in the world on the decks.  On a superyacht.   In the Hudson.  Under the fireworks.  There's really no question why this is one of the most magical and coveted EDM events on the calendar.

For the record, I wasn't technically with "200 of my closest friends." I boarded the yacht knowing 2 other people, but I left as friends with what felt like the whole boat.  You just can't even imagine the positive vibes out there...totally overwhelming how warm and inviting everyone was.  This is really what it's all about folks.  Just all walks of life coming together for one amazing celebration.

This year we were on the Lady Windridge, a 170' beast of a luxury yacht that has been used several times over the years down at WMC for Sasha / Digweed parties.  Everyone got to the Chelsea piers around 4, we boarded by 5, and cast off by 6.  Of course the music started at 4, however.

James Teej warmed up the party during the boarding process, with Thugfucker coming on shortly after casting off.  Teej came back on around 7:30, then turned it over to Sasha shortly before sunset.  Overall, the mixing was fairly free-flowing though; and by the end of the night, all of them were essentially going back to back, which was faaaaaaantastic.  Ever wonder what happens when 4 phenomenal DJs are going track for track trying to pull from the depths of their record boxes? Its a beautiful thing.  I would kill for the entire track list, but I'm sure several of them were private edits / unreleased.

Now that I got the basics out of the way, time for a TON of track IDs and some videos from the evening.

Danny Tenaglia, Digweed, Pleasurekraft

Three huge names, all on one island, in downtown New York City, on the same day. I feel like I don't even need to say anything else really but if I must elaborate and convince some of you then continue reading.

Before I begin to explain, if you are into deep house, tech house, techno, and tribal house at all then just do yourself a favor and buy a ticket right now, I guarantee you won't regret it. First off, Danny Tenaglia is a straight legend, especially around New York City. As far as locals go, no one could possibly be bigger than Tenaglia. The man has played everywhere imaginable and truly knows house music as he has been killing it since forever ago. He never plays a set (or transition for that matter) twice, as any quality DJ should. He is the true meaning of what a DJ is, no pre made set where you simply press play, you hear what he wants and feels at that moment. If you missed him at EDC NY or at Pacha this week then I urge you to come even if it is just for him.

Secondly, John Digweed takes more of the progressive house style but has largely been influenced by his close friend Sasha. Sasha recently played an epic boat party that my friend wins1o will write about shortly but let me just say that Digweed is up to par with Sasha so prepare for greatness here as well. He played at EZoo last year and was dominating the main stage (kind of wish he was in the Sunday School tent but whatever). Below I have posted some of his remixes that are in a word, timeless.

Lastly, and most importantly in my opinion, are Pleasurekraft. I have been waiting for them to come to NYC (and begging them to do so) for the past couple years. I missed them at Cielo last year in May and have been awaiting their return ever since. Hopefully, we will get the both of them but I fear this may not be the case. Either way I cannot wait for them, as every single release since Tarantula has been a treat. From Tarantula to Carny to The Main Ingredient to Skeleton Key (released today), every song is spectacular with that signature circus sound that only Pleasurekraft can deliver. Prepare for some of that old apple pie melody to shine through all day and night at Governor's Island.

Tickets can be found here and a couple preview tracks are below after the jump. Prepare yourself for one of the best overall house shows that will ever be in NYC. Do not sleep on this one folks.

Justin Martin Summer Mix - FREE DOWNLOAD

If there is one thing I love more than amazing music, it has to be FREE amazing music. Lucky for us, Justin Martin is a generous man and has dropped a free mix for download here that is absolutely perfect for the summertime. This bad boy is the perfect mix of funky, deep and straight bass to get any party going. For those of you unfamiliar with the Dirtybird sound, make sure to give this one a listen it does not disappoint! After you check out this superb mix, make sure to check him out with Zombie Disco Squad at Sullivan Room later in July (as the image above states).

Wolfgang Gartner New EP

Our good friend Joey Youngman, better known to the masses as Wolfgang Gartner, released previews to the tracks on his upcoming Casual Encounters of the 3rd Kind EP.  The two tracks play off each other very well.  The first song "Girl on Girl" is probably my favorite of the two with its stabbing synth lines and deep bass.  The second track, "Girl on Boy" is a bit harder and has almost a dutch house ring to it.  Either way, I've been really excited about the last few releases from Wolfgang and am really looking forward to the direction he is heading.  Check out the two previews below and be sure to buy these when they are released!

Big Room House? Why not...

It's been awhile since any Big Room House has been posted around here. This is largely due to the fact that we believe the sound is getting to be a little too predictable and stale. However, I do occasionally find a few songs that become guilty pleasures of mine for a brief amount of time and we know there is still a demand out there for some so feel free to indulge in the next few new tunes. Who knows, if you have to work tomorrow after the 'Mercuhhh festivities perhaps this uplifting House music will be exactly what the doctor ordered to get you through the day. I imagine at least 1 or 2 of these will be played at a bar near you very soon too and it never hurts to be prepared.

Digitaria - Hot Creations

As I tend to get more and more songs that are released on the Hot Creations label, I find myself enjoying Hot Creations more and more.  Then I ask myself, why did I ever doubt Hot Creations for even a split second?  The newest release on Hot Creations is simply fantastic in my mind and has a bit more of a funk edge to it than the norm on the label.

This new release from Digitaria is the Masochist EP and although the title track may not be may favorite of the bunch it is still a pleasure to listen to.  I would have to say that either You Bring Me Down or Crazy Life are the best due to that thick semi funky synth in both of them that is just too delicious to pass up.  Couple that with a more mysterious sounding female vocal and you have a winner in my book.  Please sit back and enjoy all of these tunes and of course support Digitaria on Beatport.

Viceroy - Chase Us Around feat. Madi Diaz

Today marks the release of Viceroy's first single of 2012 entitled "Chase Us Around".  Another perfect summer tune, this poolside hit features the vocals of Madi Diaz paired up with a great steel drum and groovy bass.  If you close your eyes, you can just smell that good ol' salt water air.  Make sure to give this a spin at your BBQ or beach party this 4th of July as it is sure to keep the relaxed vibes on high.  As always, support the man by buying this stellar track from iTunes or Beatport.

Electronic Music at the 2012 Olympics

With the huge popularity of electronic music, it isn’t surprising to find out that it will have a strong presence at the Olympics.  London 2012 will have 5 official songs composed for it, using the (all British) talents of: grime pioneer and hip-hop artist Dizzee Rascal, dance duo Pnau (doing a remix of an Elton John song), alternative dance band Delphic, Muse, and electronic music legends The Chemical Brothers (YES!!!).  To top it off, Underworld will be composing the music for the 3 hour opening ceremonies.

Of the five official London 2012 songs only two have been released-

Pnau vs Elton John- Good Morning to the Night

Pnau is a dance duo made up of Nick Littlemore and Peter Mayes.  Those names may be more recognizable to some from their side project, the hugely popular Empire of the Sun, of which Nick Littlemore is a band member and Peter Mayes is the producer.  Pnau and Elton John have been close ever since Elton listened to their self-titled album and declared it the best record he’s heard in a decade.  The remix they did for the olympics, “Good Morning to the Night,” is actually part of an entire album Pnau is doing of remixed Elton John songs.

Here is a rip of the song from Radio 1.  It is a lot of fun and very uplifting.  I think it will be a great fit for the 2012 olympics.

Muse - Survival

This is definitely not Muse’s strongest showing.  I understand they wrote the song for the olympics, but these lyrics are so cheesy:

“Race, life is race
And I’m gonna win
Yes, I’m gonna win
I'll light the fuse
And I'll never lose”

Sound Singularity will definitely keep an eye out for the other songs as they get released.  The Chemical Brothers song is scheduled to be officially released on July 30th.  The song is specifically being written for the Velodrome, which is the indoor cycling track.  Here is a pretty funny quote from The Chemical Brothers’ Tom Rowlands about the song, from www.vulture.com:

“We're doing music for the Velodrome at the London Olympics. I'm a very keen cyclist and was trying to get tickets, but it seemed like the only way to do it was to make the music for the event. It's kind of a long-winded way of doing it.”

Underworld will be working with Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle on the three hour opening ceremonies.  Danny Boyle used Underworld’s song “Born Slippy” on his 1996 film Trainspotting, and they have collaborated many times since.  I am very excited to see what these guys come up with to compete with the spectacle we got to witness four years ago in China.

The 2012 Olympics will be hosted in London from July 27th to August 12th.  U.S.A! U.S.A!
