With another 3 days of Electric Zoo behind us, I would like to first thank Made Event and all of the artists for giving us an incredible experience. The weekend went on without a hitch, and the masses were given some performances that they’ll remember forever. Now, onto my review of day 3 in the Sunday School Grove (aka home) after the jump!
Djedjotronic vs Strip Steve
With our bodies bruised and beaten on the
morning of the last day, I questioned whether I’d be able to pull it together
in time to catch such an early set.
Lucky I and a couple others were able to force down a couple drinks and
head over in time to catch about 45 minutes of the BNR’s Djedjotronic &
Strip Steve. I’m very glad I did, because
within minutes I was dancing and feeling great again. The two put on a fun show, playing some of my
favorites such as Modeselektor- Evil Twin, Worthy & Eats Everything- Tric
Trac, and the song of the weekend, Julio Bashmore’s Au Seve. I felt they lost the crowd a little when they
slowed it down for the last song or two, and definitely drew a look of
confusion/disgust from an on-looking Martin Buttrich, which was pretty hilarious. Overall, another great opening set to get us
going.
Better Lost Than Stupid (Buttrich, Squillace, &
Tanzmann)
With three techno veterans taking the stage at
once, the expectations were that this set would be nothing short of
spectacular. That is exactly what we got
as the legendary trio turned an early Sunday set into one hell of a dance party. Their whole 2-hour set had a great flow to
it, not an easy feat when djing with multiple partners. Overall, had to be one of my favorite sets of
the weekend. Judging by the rest of the
crowd’s reactions I’m sure I’m not alone in that.UMEK
After UMEK had to cancel due to sickness last year we were all really looking forward to seeing one of the most highly regarded tech-house dj/producers at work. Right from the start I was extremely impressed; UMEK is a dj that you can tell has complete control over the music. Throughout his set he continuously chopped up and edited his music live, all while mixing seamlessly and keeping the energy pumping. Highlight of the set for me had to be when he dropped Pleasurekraft’s remix of Shut Up & Dance, which we first heard during Pleasurekraft @ Governor’s Island.
Apparat
Hands down, the surprise set of the weekend for me. When I first found out Apparat would not be
performing with his band I was pretty disappointed. I was still excited to see his dj set, but
figured he would come out with a more mellow song selection. This was not the case at all- Apparat brought
the HEAT. With one of the most energetic
sets of the weekend, Apparat played a pretty diverse selection of techno, which
from what I can remember included Au Seve (of course), Scuba- The Hope, and
countless tracks I need to id.
We took a break from the action during Dixon so we’d be ready for the big finish, but from what we could see/hear he was putting on quite a show inside the tent. Definitely won’t be missing him next time he comes to town.
Boys Noize
Ever since I saw him for the first time a few years ago, Alex
Ridha has been one of my favorites. Few
are able to bring that amount of energy & intensity to a performance while
still maintaining some of the best technical dj skills out there. This set was
far different than any I have seen from him in the past. He still kept with his classic acid techno
and breaks sound, but I’ve never seen a set from him with so many tracks that
were new to me. He led off his set with
his new release XTC which led into 1010, played his classic collaboration with
Erol Alkan, Lemonade, threw in Gesaffelstein’s Depravity, and also showed off
his new collaboration with Skrillex (gasp!) titled Next Order. To be honest, I don’t care who that track is
with because it is a dancefloor BOMB. He
finished it all off with a live mix of Yeah & Swoon. Can’t ask for much more out of a Boys Noize
set than this, he was on his A-game as usual.
Keep your eyes out for more exciting things from Boys Noize
in the near future. His new album “Out
of the Black” will be out in October and he will be making a stop in NYC on November 30 with his new LIVE show!
Marco Carola
Being the last timeslot of the weekend, details are understandably
a little hazy from Marco Carola’s set. I
do however remember that it was a blast, and we have this video to prove
it. I will definitely not miss my next
opportunity to see Marco so my memory can be refreshed.
Hope this helps bring back some good memories as we
continue to work through the dreaded post-festival blues.
